Half a billion people use Dubai's public transport for the year

Over 500 million people became passengers in Dubai's public transport in 2017.

More than 550 million people used public transportation in Dubai during 2017, according to the Office of Roads and Transport (RTA). Last year, the corresponding figure was 543.6 million people.

Thus, daily 1.51 million people use public transportation in Dubai.

Mattar Al Thayer, CEO and chairman of the RTA, said the metro accounted for 36 percent of total passenger traffic, followed by taxis (32 percent) and buses (28 percent). The metro served 200 million passengers, compared with 191.3 million in 2016. The red line has become the busiest - 128 million passengers. The busiest stations are Burjuman and Union.

March was the most active period for public transport with the largest number of passengers - more than 49 million people. It is followed by December (48.8 million), Al Thayer added.

Al Thayer said: “The share of public transport in traffic has increased from 6 percent in 2006 to 17 percent in 2017. The RTA aims to increase the share of public transport to 20 percent by 2020 and 30 percent by 2030."
