Russian-Emirate Cultural Relations

Russian-Emirate cultural ties are developing quite actively. Emirates show growing interest in the achievements of our country in this area, regularly invite Russian masters of culture.

The performances of various Russian creative groups enjoy constant popularity in the UAE. In the past years there have been a lot of them. So, only in 2006 - the first half of 2007. the Kremlin ballet, the Moscow Virtuosi orchestra conducted by V. Spivakov, the A. Volochkova ballet troupe, the Russian Ballet, and the Symphony Orchestra of the Central Music School P.I. Tchaikovsky, Imperial Russian Ballet, Rostov State Musical Theater. In Dubai, concerts were held by a number of well-known pop artists - Joseph Kobzon, Valery Meladze, Mikhail Shufutinsky, Dima Bilan, the Tatu group and others.

A notable event in local cultural life was the participation of the Hermitage Orchestra (St. Petersburg) and the Chamber Youth Orchestra (Voronezh) in the IV Classical Music Festival held in Abu Dhabi in April 2007.

In March 2007, a delegation of the Union of Russian Writers consisting of poets E. Rodchenkova, V. Terekhin and translator of Arabic literature O. Bavykin took part in poetry evenings in Abu Dhabi on the occasion of International Poetry Day. During this visit, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Union of Writers and Writers of the UAE.

Recently, cooperation in the field of museum business has become a new important area of ​​bilateral cultural ties. In November 2006, Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail B. Piotrovsky discussed in Abu Dhabi the possibility of holding an exhibition of works from the collections of this museum.

Then, in February 2007, during a visit to the UAE, the head of the Russian Federal Agency for Culture and Cinematography M.E. Shvydkoi between the Russian Culture and the Department of Culture and Historical Heritage of Abu Dhabi signed a Protocol of Intent regarding the holding of an exhibition of Russian art in the UAE. In accordance with this Protocol, in April 2007, Abu Dhabi was visited by the Director General of the State Museums of the Moscow Kremlin E.Yu. Gagarin.

Following the results of the agreements reached, in September 2007, an exhibition of treasures of the Moscow Kremlin museums was held in the emirate capital, which was visited by 17 thousand people during the month of its work. Magazines in Russian are published in the country - Russian Emirates, Business Emirates, Keys of the East, Aquatoria of luxury life, and a number of others, and Russian periodicals are distributed.

Since the end of 2005, the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in the UAE, Father Alexander, has been providing pastoral services to the local Orthodox community (which is made up by Russians and citizens of the CIS countries). In September 2007, the construction of the first Orthodox church on the Arabian Peninsula (Apostle Philip) in the emirate of Sharjah began, in the laying ceremony of which the head of the Department of External Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Kirill took part.

In general, not only the Emirates, but also Russians living in the UAE (about 10 thousand people), the local Russian-speaking diaspora, feel the need to further expand contacts with representatives of Russian culture and art. This, in turn, will help expand the ties between our countries in this important area.
