Dubai Duty Free sales up 21% in the first quarter of this year

Sales in Dubai Duty Free (DDF) stores increased 21% in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the same period in 2009. This one of the largest retailers notes a “return of consumer confidence and trust” after a difficult past year, which was remembered by all the problems associated with the global financial crisis. Thus, DDF sales in the period from January to March of this year amounted to 1.1 billion dirhams (US $ 300.5 million).

“Our sales at the end of last year increased by 3.76%, which could not but rejoice. Despite this, 2009 was a difficult year for many retailers who had to critically evaluate their position,” said Colm McLaughlin, CEO of DDF. “However, starting from the second half of last year and in the first quarter of this year, we definitely note an increase in consumer spending by the population in relation to goods of all categories, including expensive luxury products.”

Perfumes and gold still top the list of sales in the duty free zone. In particular, perfumery sales increased by 23% this year and amounted to 150 million dirhams (US $ 40.9 million), gold - by 22% and amounted to 123 million dirhams (US $ 33.6 million). In the first quarter, sales of confectionery products increased by 20% and reached 87 million dirhams (US $ 23.7 million), electronic goods - by 15% and reached 80 million dirhams (US $ 21.8 million), wall and wrist watches - by 41%
